The Institute of Public Relations defines PR as

"The deliberate, planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between an organisation and its public."

The main medium for PR is the press release however 97% of all press releases go in the bin!

The reasons they fail include:

  • Irrelevant material sent to the wrong journalist
  • Not newsworthy enough - quality not quantity is important
  • Received after a deadline - is it a daily, weekly, monthly medium?
  • Badly written - the headline and the first paragraph make up the key part

Before you start to write your press release, make sure that your key message is very clear.
