Information Sheet: Marketing: Direct Mail

You can promote your event and organisation by using direct mail but it can also be an effective method of gathering much needed information about your audience.

Consider the following:-

  • 75% of all consumer mail is opened and scanned
  • 53% of this mail is opened and read
  • The average household receives 12.8 items of mail every 4 weeks

(Source - Direct Mail Information Service)

You can reach a lot of people by this method and if your mail shot is well targeted it can be cost effective. Make sure that you always evaluate any direct mail campaign you undertake and ensure that:

  • The envelope - gets their attention
  • The letter - is personal and relevant
  • The leaflet - can be used it to persuade and inform
  • The response - is easy

Top tips

  • Target it
  • Always include a letter
  • Be clear about your objective
  • Be honest
  • Keep it short and keep people reading
  • Make it look interesting
  • Ask for action and make it easy
  • Keep your mailing lists up to date

P.S. A postscript works well (but don't overuse!)
