Information Sheet: Funding - Stage 6: Make applications

After finding appropriate funders, the next stage is to make a good application.

HINTS AND TIPS ON WRITING APPLICATIONS

Writing a funding application can be a daunting task, but it does not have to be. It is no more than answering a series of questions and placing them in paragraphs.

A well-written application is important - just remember that you must demonstrate to the funder that your organization or project is well managed and you can cope with financial management demands.

Your application should be no more than 2 sides of A4. Within this space you must make it easy for the funder to read. Funders are more concerned with the aim of the project and not necessarily with the means of achieving that aim. You must assume the funder knows nothing about your organisation's work and you should attach a clear and concise letter to accompany the application.

The letter should include:

  • Project title - describing what you want to do
  • Clear summary - why it is needed, who will benefit and how, how much it is costing and the amount you are asking for
  • Who you are and what you do
  • Problem assessment - show a demonstrated need, why something needs changing, who will benefit
  • How you plan to carry out this work - what results you expect to see, where it will take place, how the project will be managed, monitored and evaluated
  • Budget - be clear and realistic, ask for a specific amount and state why the funder may be interested in supporting this work. Mention any previous approaches whether successful or otherwise, and refer to the trust's guidelines
  • Funding plan - show how you intend to raise money both now and in the future. Explain what funds have been received so far and who else you are applying to (if applicable).
  • Always try to raise some money locally as a community contribution to the project
  • Signing off - who you are, your position in the organization and who to contact for further information.

Finally, when you think your letter of application is ready to send ask someone, who is not connected with your organization, to read everything and give you some feedback.

Remember, writing applications is 80% preparation and 20% practical
