Information Sheet: Funding - Stage 5: Locate Funders

Once you have made a budget you can start looking for funders.

Think about where to go for it. Possible sources are:

  • statutory bodies
  • charitable trusts
  • special funds, e.g. Telethon, BBC Children in Need
  • businesses
  • raise it yourselves

The next step is to draw up a list of potential funders. To do this, you will need to do some research. For example:

  • Research potential funders
  • Explore local networks
  • Work in partnership with other local organisations
  • Keep in touch with Community Funding officers at the District and County Councils
  • Check funding websites regularly (see suggested sites in links section)
  • Choose funders whose criteria the project fits
  • Make contact before you prepare your application to ensure your project fits the funders' criteria
  • Find out the funders' timetables or timescales for reply;
  • State clearly where you hope to find all the funding.
